Want to become an LGSA Observer?

There is one role which probably gets the most in depth and detailed view of all the action during a Lake Geneva swim - the Observer. Want to get up close to the action? There is no better seat than live and front of house on the escort boat following the swimmer throughout their attempt. Every stroke made, every joke shared, all the pain suffered and all the ecstatic joy experienced by a swimmer will be felt first hand by the Observers. They will be the people recording everything that happens during a swim including the swimmer’s position, feeds, stroke rate, weather and water conditions and all other factors which influence the swim.

The objectives of the LGSA include to “assist, observe and authenticate those who wish to attempt to cross Lake Geneva, by means of swimming”. In order to fulfil this objective effectively official Observers must be present to observe and collect all the information from a swim which is to be reviewed by the LGSA. In order for a swim to be officially recognised, at least two LGSA Committee members must read, check and ratify the documentation provided by the Observers.

An Observer is more than just a spectator, they are a key part of every swim and play an active role during what is, no doubt, a life-defining moment for Lake Geneva aspirants. You will find most swimmers remember who their Observers were. Observers are appointed by the LGSA as the eyes and ears of the association during a swim, and are a mandatory component if swimmers want to have their swims officially ratified.

Observers are not a new phenomenon, and have been part of the very first open water swims, either as ‘referees’, witnesses or now Observers. Whatever the name they have all fulfilled the crucial role of verifying the truth and integrity of the swim.

An Observer will be expected to keep track of stroke rates at regular intervals, ensure the swimmer does not touch the boat and also approve the swimsuit and cap used by the swimmer. Every application for recognition of a successful swim must be accompanied by the Skipper’s chart positions and by the Observer's Report, recording important information including but not limited to incidents, time, currents and methods of feeding. The LGSA Committee may also call for additional evidence if they require it. The appointed Observer is in sole charge of the timing of the swim, and shall be responsible for observing compliance with the rules, subject to ratification by the LGSA Committee. Observers will also be awarded Honorary Membership of the LGSA with voting powers for the years in which they act as Observers.

Interested?

The LGSA is always looking for enthusiastic and responsible people to observe and officiate during Lake Geneva swim attempts. You must be over 18 years old (or 16 with parental consent) and available during the summer months throughout June - September. Swims may take place during any day of the week and without a lot of prior notice. Observers receive training, money for expenses and are looked after by the experienced boat crews.
